Diversification in Farming: Why strong branding and marketing matter
WRITTEN BY: ALISON JOSHI, DIRECTOR OF JWJ DESIGN
Across the UK, many farmers are looking at ways to future-proof their land and income. From opening farm shops to running experiences, cafés, and glamping sites, diversification is no longer just a buzzword — it’s a way to make rural businesses more resilient to all the outside factors beyond their control. (British weather being one of them!)

Why diversify?
Farming has always been a demanding and ever-changing industry. Rising costs, shifting consumer habits, and environmental pressures mean that relying solely on traditional agriculture can feel increasingly precarious year-on-year. Diversification gives businesses a chance to:
– Build new income streams
– Make better use of existing assets and land
– Connect with local communities and tourism networks
Whether that means introducing a farm shop, glamping site, or family experience, diversification helps you tell a new story about your land — one that connects people emotionally as well as practically.
Glamping
One of the most popular routes is glamping. The demand for unique, nature-based getaways continues to grow, especially among families and couples who want to get outside and for their children to get away from their digital devices – but are not hardy enough for traditional camping.
From shepherd’s huts and safari tents to eco-pods and luxury cabins, glamping offers flexibility, scalability, and strong visual appeal. It’s a natural fit for farms with beautiful landscapes and empty fields.
But with more and more glamping sites appearing each year, and with each offering their own unique experience, it is making sure that yours looks visually appealing on your website and on social media.
Where branding and marketing come in
1. Define your story
What makes your location special? Is it your heritage, your landscape, or your family’s connection to the land? A strong brand story helps guests feel like they’re part of something genuine. It can even be as simple as showing behind the scenes of the site and the family and people that work there.
2. Build a visual identity
Your logo, colour palette, and photography style should reflect the atmosphere guests can expect when they arrive. A glamping site in a wildflower meadow will feel very different from one in ancient woodland, or one with farm animals available to feed and pet. Make sure your branding looks rustic, connected to nature whilst still feeling premium.
3. Know your audience
Who are you trying to attract? Families looking for a nature-filled weekend? Couples craving peace and quiet? Groups of friends looking to connect and get away from everyday life? Each group responds to different imagery, messaging, and channels. Clear targeting keeps it simple and avoids mixed messaging.
4. Make your website work hard
Your website is your digital farm gate, and often the first impression people get. It needs to showcase your site beautifully, be easy to book through, and work seamlessly on mobile. Professional photography and clear calls-to-action make all the difference.
5. Create a consistent experience
Every touchpoint should feel aligned — from your social media feed and signage, to the welcome notes in your cabins. Consistency builds trust, and trust leads to repeat bookings and word-of-mouth referrals.
6. Use local connections to strengthen your brand
Partnering with local producers, artisans, and attractions not only boosts your appeal but reinforces your sense of place. Your guests will remember the homemade chutney from the farm shop or the guided walk you recommended far more than a generic “luxury stay.”
Diversification can be an exciting — and sometimes daunting — journey. But the farms that thrive are the ones that invest in their identity as well as their infrastructure.
At JWJ Design, we help rural businesses and visitor attractions clarify their message, develop consistent branding, and reach the right audience. Whether you’re launching a glamping site, creating a new farm café, or simply looking to refresh your image, a clear, confident brand will give you the edge in a noisey space.
If you’re thinking about diversifying, we’d love to chat and help alleviate any of the brand and marketing items on your to-do list.
